WongPartnership commended in FT Innovative Lawyers Asia-Pacific Awards 2024 for work representing Deutsche Telekom AG
10 Jun 2024We are delighted to announce that our firm, WongPartnership LLP, has been commended in the FT Innovative Lawyers Asia-Pacific Awards 2024 for our work representing Deutsche Telekom AG (DT) against the Republic of India before the Singapore courts. The award seeks to recognise firms and in-house teams for their innovative strategies which significantly benefit both business and society.
The team, comprising our Head of International Arbitration, Koh Swee Yen SC, Partner Joel Quek and Associate Victoria Liu from our Commercial and Corporate Disputes Practice, acted for DT in enforcing an UNCITRAL investment treaty arbitral award in excess of US$150 million against India, and was recognised for developing and pursuing novel legal strategies which effectively curtailed attempts to rehash arguments raised previously, aiding DT's global enforcement efforts.
This commendation coincides with the publication of a special issue of the Singapore Academy of Law Practitioner Journal titled “Preventing Further Bites of the Cherry in Challenging Arbitral Awards” authored by Koh Swee Yen SC and Joel Quek, and assisted by Victoria Liu, where they discussed the important conceptual questions that were discussed by the Court of Appeal in The Republic of India v Deutsche Telekom AG [2024] 1 SLR 56, including the application of the conflict of laws principle of transnational issue estoppel in the arbitration context, as well as the existence of the newly coined “Primacy Principle” as a doctrine of Singapore arbitration law, and the impact of these developments on international arbitration law and practice.
