CHAN Yu Xin is a Partner in the Specialist & Private Client Disputes Practice and Private Wealth Practice. 

Yu Xin's main area of practice is in family law with a particular focus on matrimonial disputes. She has acted for both local and expatriates (including Mandarin-speaking), and she handles all aspects of matrimonial litigation such as high-net-worth divorce, separation, division of assets (including the tracing and preservation of assets), maintenance issues, and child-related disputes including applications involving international elements. Yu Xin has represented clients before all levels of the Singapore courts. 

She is also experienced in the non-contentious resolution of family law issues, regularly acting in the negotiation of prenuptial agreements, postnuptial agreements, separation agreements and other out-of-court settlements including private and court mediation. 

In addition, Yu Xin frequently advises clients on wills, estate matters, mental capacity issues, adoption, and succession planning. She is also a member of the Family Law Practice Committee of the Law Society of Singapore.

Yu Xin graduated from the National University of Singapore and is admitted to the Singapore Bar. 
 

Matters of significance in which Yu Xin has been involved in include the following:

  • Acting for various high-net-worth individuals in the litigation of their matrimonial proceedings before the Family Division of the High Court and Court of Appeal. Reported decisions include WLI v WLJ [2023] SGHCF 15, CLD v. CLE [2021] SGHCF 12, UVF v. UVG [2019] SGHCF 21 and VMO v. VMP [2020] SGHCF 23 which touched on complex issues of asset determination and division. 
  • Acting in the out-of-court resolution of marital disputes both pre- and post-commencement of court proceedings via private settlement and mediation. 
  • Advising on, preparing and negotiating prenuptial and postnuptial agreements for both local and expatriates involving elements of Singapore and foreign law, as well as against the backdrop of larger wealth and succession planning instruments.  
  • Acting in court proceedings involving the successful enforcement of a postnuptial agreement wherein the court upheld the maintenance terms in favour of our client. 
  • Acting and obtaining custody, care and control, and child access court orders in cases involving myriad issues of substance abuse and allegations of violence before the Court of Appeal in APE v. APF [2015] 5 SLR 783, as well as in application for Personal Protection Orders in matters related to family violence.
  • Acting in proceedings related to matrimonial disputes, including in Lau Sheng Jan Alistair v. Lau Cheok Joo Richard and another [2023] 5 SLR 1703 which involved a family home held on trust for a child of a marriage where the parents were undergoing protracted divorce proceedings.
